We have a number of demonstrations available at this time!
All demonstrations are free, but potentially have a small fee to cover supplies. Our members will arrive at your venue, set up, perform the demonstration, and tear down. Please inquire for specific location requirements and demonstration lengths.
**We ask that you send your demonstration request at least one (1) month in advance.

- The date and time of your event
- The location of your event
- The demonstration(s) you would like to have performed
- The projected number of guests
- Any other pertinent information regarding your event

Origami – Paper Folding Art

Learn how to fold several shapes with our origami demonstration.
- We will provide origami paper.
- This demonstration only requires a table that can be provided by SJ and can be performed inside or outside.
- Demonstration length: 30 minutes – 1 hour
- Minimum number of guests: 5
- **There may be a small fee to cover the cost of paper depending on the number of guests

Japanese Calligraphy

Delve into the meditative art of Japanese Calligraphy. Learn the basic rules for holding the brush, the different strokes, a few simple characters, and how to write your name.
- Demonstration length: 1 hour
- Set-up and Tear-down time: about 30 minutes
- Space requirements: one room large enough for all guests to comfortably sit
- Additional requirements: white board or empty wall where posters can be hung/taped; at least one sink for washing brushes; tables or desks for guests to write at; chairs for guests to sit during the demonstration; old newspapers for catching ink spatters and to take home finished calligraphy.
- Maximum number of guests: 30
- We will provide all calligraphy supplies including brushes, ink, calligraphy paper, ink stones, paperweights, and example characters
- ** Guests are encouraged to wear dark or old clothing that can be stained
- ** There is a fee for supplies depending on the number of expected guests.

Kimono – Yukata Wearing Experience

The first of our kimono demonstrations is our Yukata Wearing Experience. SJ has many different yukata and happi for guests to borrow. After guests have selected their outfit, members will assist in dressing them in yukata over their clothes. Members will help guests take photos after.
- Demonstration length: 1+ hour (depending on the number of guests)
- Set-up and Tear-down time: about 30 minutes
- Space requirements: one room large enough for all guests to comfortably sit during the explanation, and room to change into yukata after. *Men and women do not need separate changing areas as yukata will be worn over guests’ clothing.
- Maximum number of guests: 20** (due to limited supplies, we currently only have enough yukata for 20 guests to wear – please inquire if you have more guests to determine if there is a possibility to accommodate your event).
- We will provide all yukata and yukata accessories
- ** Guests are encouraged to wear lightweight clothing such as t-shirts and shorts for yukata to be worn over. Please inquire for more details.
- ** Makeup and hair styling is not included
- ** Members will assist guests in de-robing after the demonstration is complete.

Kimono belt-tying

The second of our kimono demonstrations is often combined with the Yukata Wearing Experience. Watch as members demonstrate intricate belt-tying styles for kimono worn in formal occasions and learn about the history of kimono.
- Demonstration length: 30 minutes
- Set-up and Tear-down time: about 30 minutes
- Space requirements: one room large enough for all guests to comfortably sit during the demonstration.
- Additional requirements: we will place 2 square tatami mats down for demonstrators to stand on requiring at least 35in (depth) x 65in (width); chairs for guests to sit during the demonstration.

Shichi-Go-San
七五三・晴れ着撮影会
Shichi-Go-San (7-5-3)
is a traditional Japanese rite of passage and festival day for young children. Held annually on November 15th, families celebrate the growth and well being of three- and seven-year-old girls, and five-year-old (as well as sometimes three-year-old) boys.
Twice a year SJ offers families an opportunity to rent and be dressed in traditional formal kimono and to take commemorative photos with their personal cameras.
